No prompt to register extensions selected to be installed via DVD during server installation

This document (7017036) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 Service Pack 1 (SLES 12 SP1)

Situation

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 Service Pack 1 (SLES 12 SP1) does not ask for the registration codes for any selected extensions / add-on products when these are added manually using DVD during the installation of SLES12 SP1.

Resolution

When installing SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 SP1, there are two ways to add an extension:

1. Selecting it from the list of extensions provided by the registration server
2. Manually adding a repository, e.g. using physical media or a local mirror

The prefered method is using option 1, to select any needed extensions from the list as provided by the registration server. This option saves bandwidth (only needed packages are downloaded) and allows to install any existing updated versions of the packages directly. In case of mass deployment, the use of Subscription Management Tool (SMT) allows to download the packages only once and store them in the local network.

The second option should only be used in special cases, when there is no possibility to communicate with the SUSE Customer Server (SCC) and no local proxy is available.

Cause

Installing extensions / add-on products during the installation of SLES 12 should ideally be done by selecting any desired extensions from the list as provided by the registration server.

Additional Information

When an extension is added from local media or via manually typing the URL of the extension, it does not get registered to the registration server and this needs to be done manually if it is desirable to update the system from SCC (directly or via local proxy). Registration of the extension must then be done after the installation is complete by taking the following steps:

1. First obtain the product information for the extension(s) using "zypper products"
2. Register the extension(s) using "SUSEConnect -p <product_name>/<version>/<architecture> -r <extension_regcode>"
