chkconfig shows a value instead of the expected "on"

This document (7010036) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 1
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 2

Situation

Server has been updated (in-place upgrade) from SLES10 SPx to SLES11 SP1.

When doing a 'chkconfig ntp' the expected result would be 'on' but instead the following is displayed: '235'

Resolution

chkconfig is showing the runlevels and not 'on', when these a different to the default runlevel defined in the /etc/init.d script.

In SLES11 for some services the default runlevel has been changed.

To get this 'solved', first do 'chkconfig service off' followed by a 'chkconfig service on'

Additional Information

The following services have been found (so far):
  • dbus
  • earlysyslog
  • haldaemon
  • ntp
