NFS problems after a new install of SUSE Linux

This document (7008395) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11

Situation

A new install of SUSE Linux (probably any version) has been completed and NFS operations are being attempted, but failing.  This might conceivably involve mounting, locking, or any aspect of NFS usage.  The SUSE Linux system could be either an NFS client or NFS server.

Resolution

It has been seen in some cases that NFS did not fully function after an install was completed, until the system was rebooted.  This is in addition to the reboot that is automatically performed part way through the install.

For general verification (not just NFS), rebooting an additional time after the install has completed is a good habit to adopt.  Without it, there could conceivably be a things which initialized differently they would after an install is 100% completed.  Of course, it is intended that the system be fully functional after install.  But with the large variety of services supplied in Linux, it is better to take this simple precaution and reboot a final time.
