How to increase swap

Environment


SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10
 

Situation

You want to increase the size of swap on a Linux machine.

Resolution

If you have free partitions you can simply add an additional swap partition. If you don't have a free partition you have to either repartition or create a swap file, but this will have negative impact on the performance.

Note: more swap doesn't mean better memory management. Especially on 32bit machines you should not have too big swap partitions.
