Can't Set tg3 Driver to 1000 Mb Speed After Patching

This document (7000733) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP2
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 SP4

Situation

After patching the servers the tg3 NIC driver can only be set to 100 Mb speed. Trying to set it to 1000 Mb speed does not result in an error, however, the setting does not change from 100 Mb. The setting can be toggled between 10 Mb and 100 Mb without incident. The tg3 driver had some changes made to it that require some changes within ethtool in order to handle 1000 Mb correctly.

The speed was able to be set to 1000 Mb before patching the server to the latest patches (at the time of this writing).

Resolution

This is addressed with an ethtool patch. At the time of this writing, the patch has not yet been publicly released. It is anticipated that the patch will be included in SLES 9 SP 5 and SLES 10 SP 3 at the latest.

Additional Information

While this TID does not specify the patch name and its details, it has been released for public information.
