Client returns permission denied when scheduling remote commands through SUSE Manager WebUI

This document (7023585) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Manager 3.2

Situation

Remote commands scheduled in the SUSE Manager WebUI fail to execute with a permission denied error, e.g. similar to:

Start Date: 12/13/18 2:32 PM
End Date: 12/13/18 2:33 PM
Return Code: 2
Raw Output: view/download raw script output
Filtered Output:

stderr:

/bin/sh: /tmp/__salt.tmp.saBYiT.sh: Permission denied

The client mounts /tmp with security enhancing options like nodev, noexec, nosuid.

Resolution

Cause

Commands scheduled in the SUSE Manager WebUI are stored in a temporary script in /tmp on the client before being executed. As /tmp was mounted using the noexec option which prevents execution of scripts, the script fails with a permission denied error.
