Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 3 (SLES 11 SP3)
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 4 (SLES 11 SP4)
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 Service Pack 1 (SLES 12 SP1)
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 Service Pack 2 (SLES 12 SP2)

Situation

When registering a Client against a SMT (Subscription Management Tool) server by running the "clientSetup4SMT.sh" registration script, it fails with the message:
"Error: Cannot parse response from server".

Resolution

To solve this issue it is required to clean up all previous registration information, services and repositories from the Client's Operating System by running the following commands as root:

For SLES 11 systems:

  • suse_register -E
For SLES 12 systems:
  1. SUSEConnect --de-register
  2. SUSEConnect --cleanup
Once the registration data has been erase the system has to be re-registered against the SMT.

Cause

Previous registration of the Operating System conflicts with the new registration attempt against the SMT server.

Additional Information

In case the commands "suse_register -E" or "SUSEConnect --de-register" also report an error message it is necessary to manually delete the following data:

SLES 11:
  1. rm /etc/zypp/credentials.d/*
  2. rm /etc/zypp/services.d/*
  3. rm /etc/zypp/repos.d/*
  4. rm /var/cache/SuseRegister/lastzmdconfig.cache
SLES 12:
  1. rm /etc/zypp/credentials.d/*
  2. rm /etc/zypp/services.d/*
  3. rm /etc/zypp/repos.d/*
  4. rm /etc/SUSEConnect
