Secondary IP Address won't bind if the label is longer than 9 characters

This document (7010848) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11

Situation

Adding a secondary IP address via YaST doesn't work if the label is longer than 9 character
rcnetwork-restart fails if IP address label is too long
Unable to ping secondary IP address

YaST offers the ability to bind secondary IP addresses to an interface.  During the process, it prompts for an Alias Name.  If this name is greater than 9 characters, the secondary address will not bind to the interface.

Resolution

Shorten the alias name to less than 9 characters.
