SMT: suse_register command fails to authenticate certificate

This document (7003321) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP2
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP1

Situation

suse_register command fails to authenticate certifcate
suse_register command fails to authenticate when an intermediate CA cert is requried

Resolution

suse_register uses curl to cconnect to update servers. When a certificate has been signed either by local certificate authority or through an intermediate certificate authority, suse_register may fail.  Appending the Certfiicate Authority certificate or the intermediate certificate authority to curl's bundle file can fix this problem.

Steps to fix:
  1. Copy the CA or intermediate CA certificate to /etc/ssl/certs
  2. Back up /usr/share/curl/curl-ca-bundle.crt
  3. Run the following where CERT is the name of the CA or intermediate CA certificate
    cat /etc/ssl/certs/CERT >> usr/share/curl/curl-ca-bundle.crt
  4. Run suse_register
modifying the client4SMT.sh script

SUSE does not support modifying the client4SMT.sh script. However, advanced users familiar with shell scripting can modify client4SMT.sh to fetch an updated curl-ca-bundle.crt. If you have trouble with modify the client4SMT.sh script, SUSE will not be able to help.
  1. Put the updated curl-ca-bundle.crt on a webserver
  2. To the top of client4SMT.sh, add something similiar to the following
    wget http://$2/curl-ca-bundle.crt
    mv /usr/share/curl/curl-ca-bundle.crt /usr/share/curl-ca-bundle-`date +%Y%m%d-%R:%S:%N`.bk
    mv curl-ca-bundle.crt /usr/share/curl/curl-ca-bundle.crt
  3. Save the file
  4. If using the script example, run the the client4SMT.sh with the -host SERVER, where SERVER is the name off the server.
