Today, SUSE Linux, the international technology leader and solution provider in Open Source operating system (OS) softwareannounced that SUSE Linux 7.0 Professional Edition is tested and optimized for Oracle8i, the first database specifically designed as an Internet development and deployment platform. SUSE Linux Professional Edition 7.0 is an enterprise-class operating system platform with features for high volume e-business and enterprise applications, fully tested and supported by SUSE for Oracle8i.

In addition to supporting Raw I/O, Large Memory (4GB), 64-bit file I/O, Integrated JRE (Java Runtime Environment), and Motif 2.1, SUSE includes a Logical Volume Manager and the Journaling Reiser-FileSystem, features supporting large Oracle database servers.

The Logical Volume Manager allows users to create virtual partitions that span many physical partitions and disks. The Professional SUSE user may increase or decrease the size of the virtual partition during runtime, if more space is necessary.

The Journaling Reiser-FileSystem, made available to the Open Source community, was developed in part by SUSE research. In case of a sudden system failure, Linux systems usually recover by performing an extensive file system check, which can take several minutes. The Journaling Reiser FileSystem enables the filesystem to come back up in moments, rather than minutes, by logging every change to the data structure in the file system. The SUSE 7.0 installation tool is the first on the market allowing users to choose either the journaling file system or ext2 at installation.

"The Journaling Reiser-FileSystem is quite an advantageous feature to have when you are writing to a database, as it minimizes downtime and thereby helps minimize data loss," said Volker Wiegand, president of SUSE Inc.

SUSE has had an engineer onsite at Oracle helping integrate SUSE and Oracle8i for the past year. "We have a very low-cost solution for Oracle8i optimization," continued Wiegand. "People who understand Linux software know that everything you need to successfully implement Oracle8i is available in our distribution."

"Oracle is experiencing significant demand for Oracle8i on Linux," said Doug Kennedy, vice president, Intel Division, Oracle. "SUSE 7.0 Professional Edition Optimized for Oracle8i is a direct reflection of the engineering efforts made by SUSE at Oracle to transform Linux into a robust platform for Oracle-based e-business applications."

SUSE Linux 7.0 Professional Edition will be available in the US in September for $69.95. SUSE Linux 7.0 Professional Edition includes 1500 software applications as well as manuals for Installation, Application, Configuration, and Reference, plus 90 days of installation support.

More information about SUSE compatibility with Oracle8i by SUSE version and by Oracle8i version is available on SUSE web site, suse.com/oracle.
