Like most tech savvy folks, I use a little USB thumb/dongle/cigar/whatever drive thingy. I also frequently run out of space on it, and end up copying files to and from the drive on a weekly basis.
It would be nice to keeps “sets” of files for the different type of tasks.
For example: a set of anti-virus and utilities for the times when I am traveling to repair a few PC’s here at work, and another set of files when I want to make sure I have all my portable apps with me. You get the idea. We also happen to be using iFolder 3.
I discovered that under SLED 10 (sorry Windows users!), I can convert any folder on my USB drive to an iFolder, and it will sync just fine to the iFolder server. Also, if I leave that USB drive plugged in when iFolder starts and stops, it functions just fine.
If I remove the USB disk, the iFolder becomes “not set up”, which means it’s on the server, but not on my local machine. This is actually kind of cool. Now, I can put my “file sets” into folders – one for portable apps, one for repair tools, one for service packs, Apache config files, whatever.
All of these file sets get backed up to my iFolder server. Now, I can just wipe the USB disk clean, and when I want to put different sets of files on it, I click on the file set in iFolder, and tell it to go to the usb disk (/media/usb20fd in my case).
Another benefit is that even when I am forced to use a Windows machine, I can just grab my file set over the web, or even through the client. If I use the iFolder client on Windows, I do have the extra step of setting the iFolders to go to the hard drive, then manually dragging them to the USB disk.
