I am thrilled that this week we released SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 Service Pack 2.  It’s a big step forward for us at SUSE. This is the first major product update since we started operating as an independent business unit within The Attachmate Group. It’s also a good indication of our commitment to the SUSE Linux Enterprise platform. As you can see, the …

Virtualization technology is a critically necessary solution to the ever-increasing demand to do more with less in your data center. This white paper begins by introducing you to the benefits of virtualization and explains the terminology used within the contexts of the Hyper-V and Xen virtualization technologies. The paper continues by diving into the concepts that are fundamental to any successful implementation of either Xen or Hyper-V.

As XEN only has limited authorization capability for its live migration and all the communication is unencrypted, this solution shows how to set up live migration over an ssh tunnel. Any authorization is handled via the ssh stack.

Ivan Vari shares an excellent document focusing on a design where XEN virtual machines (domU) are centrally managed according to a set policy and highly available. What is written here is the real thing not a demo and has been working in production for over 18 months. They use this technology for hosting many UNIX services including DNS, Web proxy, SMTP, NFS, VPN, CUPS, etc. and traditional NetWare services with OES2.

The emergence of broadly deployed x86-based virtualization is causing an evolution of the role of an operating system. Novell is in an excellent position to take advantage of these changes and provide differentiation from other operating system vendors.

Novell is working hard, along with the rest of the XEN community, to significantly improve and simplify the network configuration necessary on the host sever and virtual machines. It is likely that standard network-bridge script will soon be improved to better support bonding. I have found the scripts in SP1 more than adequate for bonding, however they do need some adjustment.
