Some sweet news to report on the Linux desktop deployment front . We recently ran a promotion called “Free the Penguins” with two of our partners, Omni Technology Solutions and Userful, to deploy multi-station Linux desktops to schools worldwide. Basically, it’s a promotion where the first 30 schools who sign up get a free 30-station computer lab (hardware not included) that runs SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop.

To date, the program’s been a great success . We’ve already gotten more than 50 schools signed up in the US (in 29 separate states), Canada, South America, Europe, Africa, and Australia, and with this strong uptake, we’ll be extending this promotion until the end of the year. To learn more about it and sign up, go to Omni’s website.

For those of you who want to learn a bit more (and you can find all this information on Omni’s website), SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop is driven by a pretty cool technology. Essentially, it uses a Desktop Multiplier software add-on for SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop that allows up to 10 independent user sessions to run at the same time on a single computer. Each user has his or her own monitor, USB keyboard and mouse. The great thing about this is that while customers continue to save on licensing and software assurance costs relative to Windows and Microsoft Office, they can also save on hardware, maintenance, network infrastructure, back-up, anti-virus and electricity costs. Pretty cool if you ask me — and nice green IT solution.

When you look at it from the macro perspective, we think this makes a lot of sense. In today’s tough economic climate, schools are clearly looking for ways to rationalize IT spend, become greener both from an economic and social standpoint, while continuing to drive productivity within the organization. And we think this is a great way to go. Hopefully, with this promotion, we’ll be able to unleash many more penguins into the wild by the end of the year. Stay tuned!
