SAP and SUSE share along history of successful partnership. SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) has exclusively been the base operating system for SAP HANA for quite some time and the market values this. It is just a logical step, that what works for the data center also works for the cloud. In order to accelerate …

This entry is part 10 of 10 in the series LJDT - Linux Just Does That

Have you ever wanted to resize a disk in a VM and wondered how insanely painful that would be? After all, from the old days of platter-based spinning drives in computers (sorry to those of you still living in those days), before SANs with resizable LUNs, file-backed VMs, and other marvels of recent times, disks didn’t magically resize themselves unless it was to get smaller because they were breaking/broken. As a result, OS’s have learned to handle bad sectors by avoiding them, but growing the current, running disk just seems eerie to me every time I want to do it. Apparently I’m old.

I’m a little tardy in regards to providing a wrap up from our recent attendance at the Universe conference in Chicago, you can blame a certain mouse in the Orlando area for the delay. In regards to the conference, I’d first like to say a big Thank You! to Unisys for inviting us to participate! …

I must say that I respectfully disagree with VMware’s CEO, Pat Gelsinger on whether OpenStack will catch on in the enterprise. While he believes it won’t get traction in the near future, I believe quite the contrary and I’ll try to outline a few of the reasons. First and foremost, OpenStack is moving rapidly to …

When one thinks of market leaders in a space, it often comes down to economics or units shipped. While important, it does not always tell the full story. Market leadership can (and in my opinion should) be defined in terms of thought leadership and actions.  This definitely should be the case in the Linux space …

When it comes to change, most IT shops and OEMs would prefer not to make a jump to a recent OS update until they absolutely must. I understand, I’ve been there and done that. Understanding the aversion, I am still encouraging every partner (end user, IHV or OEM) to make the jump to SLES 11 SP3. Why? …

There’s a new breakthrough technology available as a Technology Preview in SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack3 (SP3). It’s called “virtio-blk-data-plane”—and you’ve probably never heard of it. But it deserves a fanfare because it gives KVM the ability to handle unprecedented storage I/O rates more than 50% higher than its competition. This is important …
