The Black Box Crisis: Why We Are Reclaiming Our Energy Sovereignty
As your Global Sovereignty Ambassador, I often talk about data and software, but we cannot ignore the physical reality of the systems that keep our lights on. During a recent high-level briefing, a stark truth was laid bare: our energy infrastructure is being held hostage by “black boxes.”
What is Sovereignty for the energy sector?
Energy sovereignty is the antidote to the black box crisis. It means grid operators owning and understanding their entire energy infrastructure with no hidden code, no locked hardware, and no forced dependence on proprietary vendors. When utilities have sovereignty, they can see inside their systems, mix and match components freely, and repair or upgrade equipment on their own terms. This is not only technical freedom but also operational resilience and national stability. Without it, we remain trapped behind closed doors. With it, we reclaim visibility, control, and trust in the systems that power our world.

A firsthand look at the evolution of control
I first truly grasped the weight of this situation in November 2025, while attending OSPOLOGYLive in Lyon. Hosted at the headquarters of RTE, the French electricity transmission system operator, this event wasn’t just another tech conference—it was a glimpse into the future of European digital sovereignty.
The most profound moment for me was visiting the RTE museum and their innovation spaces. Standing with a group of global IT leaders around a detailed model of our energy grid, I saw the “old” analog world with my own eyes. Those legacy systems were transparent, modular, and—above all—repairable. If a component failed, you fixed it. If technology advanced, you swapped out a part.
But as I spoke firsthand with IT leaders at RTE, the story of the last decade emerged as a direct contrast to that history. They described a slow, dangerous shift away from that transparency toward the proprietary “black boxes” that now dominate the sector.
The shift to proprietary dependency
Over the last 10 years, the energy sector has been funneled into a model that prioritizes vendor lock-in over operational resilience. The strategy from proprietary providers is clear:
- The All-or-Nothing Ultimatum: If a single component fails or a meter needs updating, providers often mandate a complete system replacement rather than a simple repair.
- Planned Obsolescence: Support is frequently refused based on the arbitrary “age” of equipment set by the vendor, even if the hardware is perfectly functional.
When a nation or a utility provider cannot maintain its own grid without a proprietary vendor’s permission—and a massive check—sovereignty is lost.
SeaPath: A line in the sand
This isn’t just a theoretical concern. Boris Dolley from RTE—who leads the project and serves as the Chair of the Technical Advisory Council at LF Energy—shared that these exact frustrations were the direct impetus for the SeaPath project.
Managed by Linux Foundation Energy (LF Energy), SeaPath (Software Enabled Automation Platform and Hardware) is a declaration of industrial independence. It represents a collective realization that giving total control to proprietary providers is a strategic risk we can no longer afford. By leveraging the power of LF Energy’s open source ecosystem, we are moving back toward systems that are replaceable, transparent, and—most importantly—under the control of those who actually operate the grid.
A powerful partnership: SUSE joins the mission
The momentum for this movement is growing. I am thrilled to share that SUSE has decided to step up and help the global energy sector by investing directly in the SeaPath project.
This is more than a financial contribution; it’s a technical commitment to the very sovereignty we discussed in Lyon. SUSE is certifying its relevant software projects to ensure they are fully integrated with the SeaPath strategy. This level of industry support ensures that when we choose open standards, we aren’t just choosing “free” software—we are choosing enterprise-grade, certified reliability that can stand up to the demands of a global energy grid.
