SUSE is sponsoring 300 online education scholarships to provide aspiring cloud native practitioners with free access to a premier cloud native education program. With these scholarships, SUSE is also focused on increasing diversity in the field of technology.

Claudia Hogan, SUSE Chief of Staff, expressed it this way: “In the open source software world, every voice and every contribution provides a lift to all. With these scholarships, SUSE is committed to expanding the number and range of voices and contributors in the cloud native workforce, particularly those from groups that are currently underrepresented. Ultimately, this benefits businesses, organizations and individuals from all backgrounds and in all markets across the globe.”

In partnership with Udacity, the global online learning platform that trains the world’s workforce for the careers of the future, SUSE is introducing the Cloud Native Application Architecture Nanodegree program and funding scholarships for select learners. This affordable, efficient and practical skills-based training program will enable aspiring technologists to grow into high-paying, in-demand careers.

Get Ahead with In-Demand Skills

The demand for talent with cloud native skills and experience continues to rise. According to the Linux Foundation 2020 Open Source Jobs Report, “In terms of knowledge domains, hiring managers report knowledge of open cloud technologies has the most significant impact, with 70 percent being more likely to hire a pro with these skills. At the same time, 93 percent of hiring managers report difficulty finding sufficient talent with open source skills.” If you are an application operator or developer, this critical skills gap presents an amazing career growth opportunity.

Self-Guided Learning is Inefficient

Even with compelling career motivation, it can still be a struggle to keep pace with the industry’s rapidly changing needs as the window of opportunity to reskill has become shorter. A self-taught approach is daunting and fraught with obstacles. Learners need the right support to achieve success. When it comes to developing the future-focused cloud native skills that can propel you forward, you need access to industry experts. A structured, efficient and practical learning path to gaining these critical skills is a powerful career accelerator.

Accelerate Learning with a SUSE-Sponsored Online Nanodegree

The latest addition to Udacity’s school of cloud computing, the Cloud Native Application Architecture Nanodegree program, can help. It combines top-notch online course content and expert instruction that leverages 100% free and open source technologies to simplify and accelerate upskilling.

Start your journey today by applying for a SUSE-sponsored scholarship. SUSE and Udacity will grant up to 15,000 applicants free access to the first course of the Nanodegree program. This Cloud Native Foundations course introduces basic skills needed to develop and deploy cloud native applications.

Once participants have completed the Foundations course, SUSE and Udacity will award scholarships to 300 learners, giving them access to the full Cloud Native Application Architecture Nanodegree program at no cost. The Nanodegree curriculum builds on the skills developed in the Foundations course with additional practical skills needed to build, secure, deliver and troubleshoot cloud native applications.

Free and Equitable Access to Education

SUSE and Udacity will grant scholarships across a diverse range of course participants, including top performers who are also women from underrepresented racial or cultural backgrounds in technology fields.

The need is real. For example, according to the DigitalOcean Currents Open Source 2019 report, while respondents overall feel that open source communities are friendly, women perceive more barriers to entry than men. More than two-thirds of women surveyed said they “would contribute more if there were more opportunities and resources to help them get started.”
