“We can now create environments in a matter of hours, over 90 percent faster than it took us before. We wouldn’t be able to do that without VMs underpinned by SUSE.” Muli Zafrir, CIO University of Haifa.

Haifa University is 18,000 students strong and widely celebrated for its contributions to cancer research, neurosciences, marine sciences and epigenetics, among other fields.

The IT department is incredibly forward-thinking and, in keeping with the institution’s culture, have adopted an open approach to technology, modernizing the infrastructure to the point where not even a pandemic could interrupt the University’s mission to foster academic excellence.

In 2015, the University of Haifa embarked on a journey of digital transformation focused on improving its student experience, and reducing costs, but would go on to achieve even more than this with its SUSE-based, modern data center.

The University of Haifa enjoys 100 percent uptime, saving millions through automation and efficiency

The University became the first in Israel to migrate its standard SAP ERP applications to SAP S/4HANA, keeping SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications as the backbone. It was also the first to run SAP S/4HANA on VMware with SLES for SAP.

This paid immediate dividends with 100 percent uptime achieved post-deployment.

The team also migrated an entire SAP applications portfolio, including admissions, student lifecycle management, educational performance management, business intelligence and financial management.

Post-deployment of SLES for SAP, the team achieved significant cost reductions with half a million dollars saved through digitization, versus investing in hardware.

Millions have also been saved through automation and efficiency. Time consuming processes have been streamlined; a task that would normally take days, such as a student filing for graduation, can be completed within the hour. The IT team can now create and test service environments 90 percent faster than before!

It was during COVID-19 that the benefits of the University’s digital transformation really shone through. In a matter of weeks, the IT team were able to virtualize learning, ensuring zero interrupted hours of course work, an unprecedented achievement with far reaching human benefits. This triumph was not overlooked by the Israeli government, who recognized the university with a special award.
