SUSE Multi-Linux Manager 5.1, What’s new?
Scalable, Secure, and Flexible Linux Management—at Your Command
Managing modern Linux environments isn’t getting easier—especially when you’re dealing with multiple distributions, growing edge deployments, and increasing security and compliance demands. That’s why we built SUSE Multi-Linux Manager—and why today, we’re excited to announce the release of SUSE Multi-Linux Manager 5.1.
This release introduces significant enhancements to help you take full control of your Linux estate—whether you’re managing SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, RHEL, Amazon Linux, or tech preview OSes like Raspberry Pi OS and OpenEuler. With improvements across security, scalability, automation, and deployment flexibility, SUSE Multi-Linux Manager 5.1 is designed to simplify operations, accelerate modernization, and give you real choice in how you manage Linux.
Built-In Security and Control: New Role-Based Access Control (RBAC)
Security starts with visibility and control. Version 5.1 introduces a fully redesigned Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) system that gives administrators fine-grained control over every part of the Multi-Linux Manager installation—across both the UI and API.
A new namespace-based hierarchy of permissions allows customers to define and manage custom roles, apply them across users, and centrally manage all access policies. Whether you’re delegating tasks to junior admins or integrating with third-party tools, you’ll have the visibility and separation of duties you need.
Enhanced Ansible Support for Automation Flexibility
While Salt remains the automation backbone of SUSE Multi-Linux Manager, we know that many customers rely on Ansible in their infrastructure. In 5.1, we’ve introduced powerful enhancements for Ansible users:
- Recurring scheduling of playbooks
- Variable definition through the UI
- Better output visualization and reporting
- Target inventory preview before execution
- Enhanced filtering and management of playbook storage
These improvements give you more freedom to automate on your terms—whether you’re running a few scripts or orchestrating complex lifecycle operations.
Scale Without the Stress: Hub Online Synchronization
As customer environments grow, scalability becomes essential. That’s why SUSE Multi-Linux Manager 5.1 introduces Hub Online Synchronization—a next-generation content sync system designed for large-scale, distributed deployments.
Replacing the legacy Inter-Server Sync (ISS) systems, this feature automates content synchronization across nodes, managed centrally from the Hub Server. Whether you’re supporting 10 locations or 1,000, you’ll gain faster updates and lower operational complexity.
Support for Even More Linux Distributions
SUSE Multi-Linux Manager 5.1 expands its reach with support for:
- Amazon Linux 2023
- SUSE Linux Micro 6.1
- SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15 SP7
- Raspberry Pi OS (tech preview)
- OpenEuler (tech preview)
This ensures even more choice and flexibility when it comes to managing your systems—especially at the edge, in research environments, or in highly customized IT estates.
Product Migration at Scale
Need to upgrade thousands of systems across different versions or service packs? No problem. With new bulk migration capabilities, admins can use System Set Manager to plan and execute migrations—automatically managing intermediate upgrade paths and reducing time spent on manual patchwork.
Simplified Support with Secure Supportconfig Collection
When issues arise, speed matters. SUSE Multi-Linux Manager 5.1 introduces multi-system supportconfig collection with automatic redaction of sensitive data and direct upload to SUSE Customer Center—through both the UI and API. This significantly reduces the time to resolution and improves collaboration with SUSE support.
Continued Containerization and Modularization
As part of our ongoing journey to containerize and modularize SUSE Multi-Linux Manager:
- Version 5.1 introduces support for SLE 15 SP7 as a host OS
- The database is now split into its own container—improving update performance and service resilience
- We’ve also improved the management of containerized Proxy instances, including automatic deployment and an upcoming status dashboard to simplify operations in highly distributed setups
