Why should SAP customers who want to obtain their applications from the cloud rely on the administration and orchestration solution SUSE® OpenStack Cloud? A new SUSE whitepaper provides the answers.

As the leading open-source cloud infrastructure solution, OpenStack offers numerous advantages over proprietary cloud solutions – above all, better interoperability with other systems, less vendor dependency, and minimized licensing costs for cloud management and virtualization solutions, which currently account for 30 percent of the cloud TCO. The quickly expanding OpenStack Foundation and OpenStack community are ensuring that this leading edge is being continually extended further and that technology is being consistently improved.

SAP also contributing to OpenStack

In 2014, two years after its establishment, SAP also joined the OpenStack Foundation, which now has over 29,000 members from 170 countries, including 530 renowned IT providers such as HP, IBM, Oracle, Intel, VMware, Dell, Cisco, and SUSE. Through its strategic support for this initiative, SAP is providing its users with greater access to the benefits of open-source cloud computing infrastructure. The unique role played here by SUSE is down to the Linux distributor’s leading role in the OpenStack ecosystem and its longstanding partnership with SAP in particular. Hence, with a market share of 70 percent, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) for SAP Applications is the leading Linux operating system for SAP environments – bringing greater cost efficiency, availability, and performance of SAP applications. In continuation of this success story, SLES was chosen by SAP as the HANA development platform.

SUSE Cloud established in the market

Among SAP customers, SUSE is also one step ahead in the OpenStack ecosystem – with good reason. SUSE was the first Linux distributor represented in the OpenStack Foundation, and with SUSE Cloud 2012, brought the first OpenStack enterprise product to market. Just a few years later, the OpenStack-based administration and orchestration solution from SUSE was firmly established in the market and in strong demand also in the SAP environment.

Whether for HANA or NetWeaver, SAP customers using SUSE OpenStack Cloud for the implementation and operation of private clouds are enjoying tangible benefits such as:

  • Fast deployment and easy management
  • Rock-solid and production-ready solution
  • Unparalleled value and investment protection
