Resources for Staying Current on Embedded System Trends

The embedded development industry is changing rapidly. To stay current, embedded technologists need to identify resources that provide value and knowledge. This can be tricky in a space with such a broad definition, especially when you consider that more than 95,500,000 Google results appear when searching for ‘embedded system development resources.’

So how do you figure out which resources will help you stay current with technology trends around embedded systems development?  

We turned to Bryan Gartner, Senior Technology Strategist with SUSE, and asked him where he goes to stay up to date on key trends within the embedded industry. Here are a few of his top resources and recommendations for navigating this rapidly changing landscape:

1. Data Science Central

If you aren’t familiar with Data Science Central, they describe themselves as “the industry’s online resource for big data practitioners. From Analytics to Data Integration to Visualization, Data Science Central provides a community experience that includes a robust editorial platform, social interaction, forum-based technical support, the latest in technology, tools and trends and industry job opportunities.”

This site has great information and content on Big Data, IOT,  edge computing, and all technology that feed into these trends. The information from Data Science Central is easy to consume through bi-weekly technical newsletters, and tips and tricks on various tools. This site is a must for anyone interested in big data since at some point one must analyze and visualize all the data coming from embedded and IoT devices.

2. Embedded Computing.com 

“Embedded Computing Design is the largest resource for blogs, news and views on silicon, software, and strategies for embedded devices, industrial and IOT”

This site is a must for keeping up on the latest technology from both the software and hardware perspectives. They have good articles on security, and a lot of discussion and topics on the use of Linux. They cover the full spectrum of solutions that are embedded across many vertical industries. A must read for anyone involved in the embedded systems world.

3. IOT Central.IO   

Whether you’re seeking industry trends, professional development or topical overviews this is Bryan’s top read recently. Even when it’s not IOT related.  Bryan’s favorite things on this site are the weekly podcasts that feature key embedded system influencers and the abundant pointers to IoT-related webinars.
