The single most significant drain on operational efficiency during a cloud native incident is the context switch. Site Reliability Engineers (SREs) and platform engineers waste critical minutes cycling between generic overviews and separate debugging tools, resulting in unnecessarily high Mean Time To Resolution (MTTR) and slower incident resolution times.

SUSE Observability’s core strength lies in its out-of-the-box automation, providing essential resource-level dashboards, issue detection, and remediation guides instantly. To truly accelerate incident response and promote collaboration, we needed to formalize the investigative journey into a seamless, permanent asset for teams and lines of business.

We are proud to announce the General Availability (GA) of Enterprise-Grade Generic Dashboarding in SUSE Observability. This new feature introduces customizable visualization with unique workflow integrations. Findings captured in Pinned Items (scratchpad) can be shared instantly, and widgets from dynamic resource dashboards can be promoted to permanent team dashboards. By retaining source links for immediate drill down, this innovation fundamentally solves the context switching problem and significantly reduces MTTR.

Beyond automation with enterprise visualization for accelerated investigation

Our new Generic Dashboarding feature defines the visualization layer for cloud native operations, transforming reactive troubleshooting into proactive, knowledge-driven operations through three core capabilities.

Enterprise visualization for data-driven decisions

This new visualization layer delivers the customization, depth, and scalability enterprise operations demand. It goes beyond simple resource health checks to support complex analytical requirements.

  • Robust query editors and diverse widget support Access enterprise-grade query editors and a wide variety of widget options for complex analysis and interactive exploration of observability data.
  • Business alignment Designed to enable data-driven business overviews and collaborative team reporting, these dashboards allow teams to visualize costs, track efficiency, and share performance insights across the organization.

Streamlining the investigative workflow

SUSE Observability deeply integrates dashboard creation into the operational and investigative lifecycle, ensuring insights gained during an incident are never lost.

  • Instant widget promotion Investigation starts with a resource-specific out-of-the-box dashboard. Any critical widget identified can be instantly promoted to a new or existing permanent Generic Dashboard with a single click, accelerating the path to proactive monitoring.
  • Formalize findings with pinned items Findings captured in Pinned Items can be shared immediately and promoted into dashboards. This turns diagnostic work into reusable knowledge assets, drastically improving team collaboration and onboarding.

Contextual continuity to reduce MTTR

The biggest time sink during outages is losing context when switching between tools. SUSE Observability solves this by maintaining continuity across the entire workflow.

  • Retain source links Every promoted widget retains its source link, allowing users to drill down instantly to the originating automated resource dashboard.
  • Zero context loss SREs can move directly from high-level dashboards into detailed, automatically generated resource views, drastically reducing MTTR during incident response.

Real-world impact: Diagnosing a Kubernetes service failure in minutes

Imagine Sam, an SRE, who is alerted to a degradation in the User Authentication Service running across 50 replicas. Without SUSE Observability, Sam would have to manually inspect logs, events, and deployments across multiple tools, losing time and focus in the process.

With Generic Dashboarding, Sam starts from a permanent Business Service Health Overview dashboard, sees the failing widget, and with one click drills down to the automated resource dashboard. The issue is immediately localized to a single unhealthy ReplicaSet and node. Sam promotes key graphs into a new permanent Troubleshooting: Auth Service Degradation dashboard, creating a reusable asset for future incidents.

This workflow cuts troubleshooting time from tens of minutes to near real time, dramatically improving reliability and productivity.

Gain instant visibility and deeper insight with SUSE Observability

The complexity of cloud native environments demands a solution as dynamic and automated as the infrastructure itself. The GA of Generic Dashboarding provides organizations with the visualization, automation, and collaboration tools needed to accelerate root cause analysis and operational excellence.
