A relic from a time “long” past finally disappears. As of today launching instances from SUSE BYOS images in Google Compute Engine no longer requires any special steps, hurray.

Prior to this change it was necessary to subscribe to the suse-byos-cloud [at] googlegroups [dot] com Google-group in order to have access to the BYOS images. This is no longer the case. Now the images can be accessed like other public images and the following command example would launch an instance of the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 SP2 BYOS image:

gcloud compute instances create –image sles-12-sp2-byos-v20170515 –zone us-east1-d –image-project suse-byos-cloud mysles12sp2byos

As subscription to the Google group to access the BYOS images is no longer necessary the Google group has been deleted which implies that all subscribers have been evicted 😉 .

All BYOS images that are active have been re-published in the new project with the side benefit that images have been updated to the state of the repositories of 2017-05-17. As always you can use pint  to find the names of the active images and the history of all images ever published.
