Linux for Mainframes
Run your most important applications on the world's leading mainframe architecture.
Are you feeling the pressure to reduce data center costs while providing more services? You're not alone. Many IT directors respond to this pressure by adding more hardware to support the required workloads. But this only leads to an increased cost of ownership (due to low server utilization rates, increased power and space requirements and more system administrators) and a more complex data center (due to multiple hardware, software and system management solutions).
And this approach does nothing to help you provision new servers and workloads in minutes or hours, as opposed to days or weeks.
SUSE® Linux Enterprise Server for System z lets you run your most important applications on the world’s leading mainframe architecture. The strengths of IBM System z are well known: high reliability, immense scalability, strong security and the ability to consolidate diverse workloads cost-effectively. All of these are fully leveraged by SUSE Linux Enterprise.
As the market-leading Linux operating system on mainframes, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for System z gives you access to the largest number of open source and proprietary applications, and offers the best technical support in the industry.
SUSE began working with IBM in 2000 to implement the first enterprise-class Linux operating system specifically designed for the Mainframe (SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for s/390). This work has continued with SUSE, and today there are well over 1,000 applications running on Linux on the mainframe. SUSE also works closely with IBM to implement customer-requested enhancements.
With the latest release of SUSE Linux Enterprise, SUSE also launched the SUSE Linux Enterprise Mono Extension, which is supported on System z. In conjunction with Mono Tools for Visual Studio, this lets you build .NET applications for Linux using x86 systems, and then test and deploy them on either x86 systems or System z. This opens the door for traditionally Windows-based workloads to be consolidated on the mainframe for the first time.
By deploying SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for System z as a consolidation platform for distributed x86- or UNIX-based workloads, you will reduce costs while increasing reliability, scalability and speed of deployment for new workloads.
Our technical excellence and proven track record in mainframe Linux have made SUSE the number-one Linux provider for System z customers worldwide. Major customers, such as First National Bank of Omaha and Nationwide Insurance, rely on it to drive their success. Take a good look at it, and see if it's right for you too.
