What a day for announcements, firstly SUSE is now collaborating with SAP to power SAP Cloud Platform in SAP data centres. SUSE OpenStack Cloud and SUSE Enterprise Storage are key elements of SAP Cloud Platform, providing robust, enterprise-grade infrastructure services.

Staying with SAP new support for high availability and disaster recovery solutions, including support for takeover automation for scale-out clusters in SAP HANA, and certification for high availability clusters and improved maintenance for SAP NetWeaver 7.40 was also announced.

Moving on to storage, SUSE Enterprise Storage 5 was announced, with enhanced ease of management, improved performance and several expanded features including new disk-to-disk backup capabilities.

The surprise just kept coming with SUSE CaaS Platform 2 release being announced. This feature-rich release demonstrates a real to commitment to rapidly advancing the platform. SUSE also previewed another new offering, SUSE Cloud Application Platform. This brings together Cloud Foundry and Kubernetes technologies for rapid application delivery with the SUSE CaaS Platform providing the Kubernetes component.

Huawei and SUSE announced a broadening of their partnership, as the companies will collaborate to build a more reliable Mission Critical Server that supports memory module hot swap, slashing unplanned maintenance time while keeping their production systems up and running.

In the afternoon the session from Howard Samm from Experian pH, was outstanding. Howard talked about how Experian were facing increasing customer demands for better insights. In the quest to provide a more comprehensive service they began incorporating new data feeds into their core databases. Like many organizations they were challenged to find a storage solution that could grow, provide increased resilience but also reduce costs. SUSE Enterprise Storage was able to meet that challenge.

Day 1 closed with a locally themed party, with local beer, and crafts being showcased. The SUSE band rocked, and the channel partners and customers I got to speak with during the evening were still buzzing from the excitement of the day. With Day 1 in the bag bring on Day 2 with Dr. T, leading the keynotes, it promises to be good.
